Continuing the discussion from What Genre of Music?:
Hey guys, Ronnie from Artesan here. I have been labelling our music as Modern / indie rock. I would really like to make sure that this is an accurate description as there are so many on Spotify. I have attached a link, would be great to get others take on this. Cheers. https://open.spotify.com/artist/24LqK3WcuC7vaREvfhbR8S?si=RmavkLpPQjmIwNMmcEN30g
I make a mix of electronic and alternative music. Singles are being scheduled for Spotify but I would love feedback or better description, here’s a couple:
Slipping Away (releasing soon);
Skinny - Kaleo cover:
How would you describe these genre wise?
We’ve had 30 years of failing to define a genre for our music, so this is just for fun. What genre would you call this?
Hey Ronnie,
I can hear the Indie in it - but also I’d say there’s elements of Neo-Folk (The Lumineers, Vance Joy type of vibe), mixed with artists like Leonard Cohen etc
Hey Rick!
I think I’d say it has elements of alternative & rock
Hey Vince…
I’d say it has elements of world music… What do you think? It’s really interesting!
I am forced to use that term often. It’s despised by everyone who gets lumped with it or forced to use it becuase there is nothing more sensible available. Some of our tunes might actually be hardcore drum and bass or dubstep but they’re not appropriate for those genres. They don’t follow the cliches and won’t fit in playlists. They may use middle eastern scales and tunings, frame drums, flutes etc. Or Viking medieval instruments.
Anyway - there is no answer! I know this after decades of releasing music. Just interested in what people make of it. I know you say being in a niche genre is good (I get that and the reasons!) but when you can’t name the genre it is not so good.
Whoa, sounds great! What time signature you got going on there? I’m counting 9 beats I think? Like you’re adding an extra beat every other bar? Really cinematic! I know there’s a bit of a blanket “New Music” term or whatever, but that doesn’t really fit here either. What if instead of naming the genre, you named the emotions you are going for?
Yeah Leonard Cohen came to mind for me too. I’d maybe go with Indie Folk if I had to settle on one here @robi0132 but Indie Rock works too. There’s even bits of Americana or Roots Rock as well, if you want to check a few more boxes.
This is exactly what I need right now! I feel like my sound is changing a bit with my next batch of singles, so I would love to hear how you would describe it. Here’s the upcoming single: https://soundcloud.com/sylviaaimee/sylvia-aimee-identity/s-8RMPTp8is7R
Thank you so much for the help
It’s in 7/4 time.
The only reason we need a genre name is for presenting our music to, for example, Spotify playlists. It’s basically impossible as we literally don’t fit ANY of the options sometimes.
It’s very cool, I enjoyed listening to it!! If you’re worried about it, you could always look at a style you’d like to combine with it to put it in a genre that’s definable?
Love this!! I would say it’s Pop Country - both Ella and I LOVE pop country!
Yeah, I can see that. Finding the right boxes to check is already hard enough!
I am really struggling with genre. I’d like to know what genre these two songs could fit into. Blood On Your Hands was my first single and Thank You Jenny From New Zealand is going to be my second single.
If I submit “Jenny” to playlists how should I categorise it and also do the two songs fit together? They are both about the UK Government, the first single being not quite so aimed at Boris Johnson himself as “Jenny” is. Is the subject matter enough to tie them together into a coherent style as an artist ?
I think I’d roll with Alternative Rock? What do you think?
It is a pretty broad genre and I think my songs are fairly eclectic so I think you’re right. There isn’t any real point in trying to pin myself down to anything more specific.
A thought has occurred to me. I have only about 15 followers on Facebook and Spotify so I presume I am still on the “release to no fans” strategy.
However in order to get more listeners for my second single, which has a similar anti government stance to the first, do I already have an identifiable target audience on Facebook in alternative rock loving Labour Party supporters over 40 in the UK? Could I even economically target that kind of demographic and if I could do you think I would get any traction on release day?
Hi guys
I was wondering if you could help me with defining my genre.
I spent most of my teenage year’s and early 20s playing bass in punk and rock bands but over the last few years I’ve picked up the six strings and wrote my acoustic based tracks to lean on my folk, alt folk and celtic punk influence’s, and my voice has been compared to Ian Curtis & Nick Cave in a review.
I experimented a little more with sound’s on my latest recordings, but live it’s just me with an acoustic, looper and stomp box.
I’ve always marketed myself of being somewhere between Jon Foreman and Frank Turner but unsure if that’s accurate.
Any feedback would be really appreciated.
Thank you.
Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated I’ll add those in on our next release.
